Like many other Samsung flagships, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 also comes with eSIM hardware out of the box. But the functionality wasn’t enabled in the US all this while. Now, nearly two years after launch, the 2020 foldable model is finally gaining it, allowing users to use two numbers on the device — one physical SIM and one eSIM. This ability is already available on the phone in many other markets since late 2020. The latest update also enables dual SIM dual standby (DSDS) support on the second-gen Samsung foldable. DSDS allows you to keep both numbers active simultaneously. You don’t have to disable one to use the other. You can use the physical SIM for calls and eSIM for data, or vice versa. Both of them are always active. This update for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is rolling out with firmware version F916USQU2HVF1 for the carrier-locked variants and F916U1UEU2HVF4 for the unlocked ones (via). It also brings improved Night Portrait and Auto Framing camera features to the device. The June security patch fixes more than 60 vulnerabilities as well, including several critical Android OS flaws. If you haven’t received this update yet, you should soon. You can check for updates manually from the Software update menu in the Settings app.
Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 also gained eSIM last month
As said earlier, Samsung has been equipping its flagship smartphone with eSIM hardware for some time now. But the functionality is often disabled in the US units. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are the other examples of it. Users of the two 2021 foldables stateside had to wait almost a year to get eSIM support. The device picked up the feature last month, complete with DSDS. Interestingly, the Galaxy S22 series had eSIM support enabled out of the box in the US. With several other Galaxies also gaining it in recent months, it appears Samsung is finally ready to go all-in on the feature. We hope upcoming Galaxy flagships would offer eSIM from day one. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are said to support the functionality out of the box. Hopefully, the US units too. The fourth-gen Samsung foldables arrive on August 10.
