The Galaxy S20 FE, which launched in September last year, was the last premium Samsung smartphone to offer expandable storage. It featured a hybrid slot (shared SIM slot), meaning you can’t use dual SIM and a microSD card at the same time. But we aren’t complaining as long as it lets us expand the storage capacity. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t offered that possibility with any of its flagship models this year. The recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 foldables also lack a microSD slot. The Korean giant doesn’t seem to see the benefits of having expandable storage on phones. The worst thing about this is that the base variant of the Galaxy S22 series will still come with 128GB of onboard storage. That may not be enough for most users. Only if the company had listened to customer feedback and at least offered a hybrid slot. Perhaps there are some business benefits to removing expandable storage from flagship devices. Maybe it makes users opt for a higher storage variant rather than the base variant, thus generating more revenue and profit for the company. These are, of course, mere speculations. But it’s getting clearer that after the 3.5mm headphone jack, the microSD slot is the next to disappear from smartphones. What’s next though? The charging port? Well, smartphone companies have already started removing the charging adapter from the retail box. So it shouldn’t be surprising if wireless charging becomes the standard across the board very soon.
