OPPO may start selling rollable smartphones next year

As some of you already know, OPPO showed off the world’s first rollable smartphone at the end of 2020. That device’s name is the OPPO X 2021. That was not just a concept, OPPO actually showed it off, and some people even got to play with it. It was a functioning unit. OPPO said that the device is not yet ready for consumers, though, and that it will not sell it. The company did promise that a commercial unit is coming, though. We were hoping that will happen last year, or at least this year, but it seems like we may have to wait until 2023. Foldable smartphones are growing in popularity, rapidly. The sheer number of them on the market will grow quite a bit until next year. Well, some people do think rollable phones are a better solution than foldable ones. It will be interesting to see how they compare, once rollable phones come to the market. It also remains to be seen how interested people will be in rollable devices, of course.

Rollable phones will be considerably thinner than foldable ones

Rollable phones do have one major advantage over foldable ones… well, two, kind of. First, they’re not nearly as thick, as their displays don’t need to be folded. The second is… the sheer fact displays don’t need to be folded, so there’s no crease. Rollable phones will essentially come with a mechanism that will elongate the display to the side. The OPPO X 2021 is actually a really nice-looking phone, and not many people would complain if the company’s first commercial unit ends up looking similar to it. OPPO is not the only company working on rollable smartphones, of course. Samsung is also developing them, and the same goes for a number of other companies. It remains to be seen who will be the first to start selling a compelling rollable smartphone.
